I think this guy says it best regarding the latest string of killings:
Between the ax murder that cause Higurashi Kai preempted and this new situation. You can not say that TV do not affect real life choices. Some people can not not determine what is fiction and what is real. To just says that these people is ruining for the fans is immature. These people have real life mental issues that should be take lightly. (emphasis mine) The brain is a very complex thing that we can not infer that TV or any media do not puts thoughts that cause radical thinking.

To put it simply, pinning a string of events down to a single factor is bordering on stupidity. We all know that violent games aren’t the only factors that contributed to the killings of either Columbine or Virginia Tech, so the same can be applied to this news.
In any cases, everybody managed to watch the finale of School Days, and HiguKai’s normal transmission schedules weren’t adversely affected, so there shouldn’t be any cause for the hoo hah. It’s a case of sensationalism at its best.
(And here we are, trying to compete with mainstream journalism for rationality.)
