ODEX, there’s a bullet hole with smoke coming out of your foot.

Parents get shock letter: 9-year-old downloads Japanese anime illegally - The Electric New Paper News
Court forces ISP to reveal culprits: Netizens cry foul: How did company track downloaders? - The Electric New Paper News
Y’know, it’d be a scarier thought if the OMB, or in fact, any licensor of anime and other forms of Japanese Media here in the Philippines, were to pursue these methods.
Think of the thousands of phonecalls the agency would get from both students and parents.
Think of the thousands of pesos the said parents of said student who download these anime titles (already licensed, but are still downloaded) via torrent have to cough out to pay for “undefined damages”.
Oh the horror!

But wait, let’s watch the cookies crumble while we’re at it (oh and this is my personal stab at the whole ODEX debacle)
Seriously, ODEX, nice going killing your “juicy” and “profitable” market. Now that you’ve pulled the plug on your fanbase of potential buyers, you’ve metaphorically shot yourselves in the foot (see title). IF you want to attract customers to your merchandise, do be sure that they are of high quality. Don’t cop out. Have trained QC’s check the media you’re presenting to the anime sphere of Singapore. By following this so simple request, you’re doing yourself a favor.
Oh, and don’t forget the thousands - no even millions all over the global Internet - of praises you’ll get by this simple move.
So ODEX. Listen to your customers. They do know best, right?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
And with this whole brouhaha off my chest, it’s off to enjoy what I do best with my hobby.

i think the whole “this happening in the Philippines” theory is many years away… since the authorities can’t even exterminate fully the amount of pirated cds and dvds in the streets… here where i’m from you can even find a person in the sidewalk with a computer that has a “cd-burning” sign on top… so anime downloading is still on the bottom of the list since the Philippine authorities still have many other things to worry about when it comes to piracy… and on the whole odex issue… i have to agree with what others have said… if they want to have more sales don’t target your customers with a witch-hunt.. instead, if you just listen to them and give them what they want you’ll bge surpriced at the increase in your sales…

its impossible to do that in the Philippines. The government cant even do a thing about pirated VCDs and DVDs. Only in Singapore that this kind of tactic by Odex can be done. Even in the U.S. The RIAA/MPAA is losing in their battle.
quote from Odex
“And our VCDs and DVDs are already priced about as low as they can go, but people still aren’t buying.
‘It’s very sad.”
What’s sad is treating their costumers like dirt. I mean, not improving their quality on anime and they expect people to buy it?
It’s very sad when a fansub outdo a company.

Hmm, you guys do have a point. The whole rubout of cybersex dens arund Manila pales in comparison to the government’s poor track record of ever getting rid of data piracy here in the Philippines.
We have the tools, but we don’t have the methods, however fool-proof they may be. :V

Reading this post, I suddenly remembered this sentence that I read before from a book : “Does anyone else find it funny that people who make much more money than we do are appealing to us not to deprive them of their income?” Or something like that. Lolz.
Anyway, I agree that the Philippines has a bigger case of piracy that anime-related issues would probably not be on top of their list. Makes you think though, hummhummmmmm.

Well, Philippine authorities would not even bother about piracy at all because they’re already focused on making themselves rich by stealing the people’s money… Such sad truth. About the news we watched about those pirated optical media being crushed by a construction vehicle and burned to ashes? They’re just showing to us that they can “AT LEAST WE’RE DOING OUR [SMALL] PART. NO MORE QUESTIONS, DAMN IT!”
They can’t even solve the political killings, even breaking the “magic spells” in the elections, so how can they solve a “small problem” like piracy? It’s a punch on the moon and even a sadder truth.

Just look at AVPAS, the local RIAA-wannabe of anime created by Odex that has Japanese studios as members. The top committee members are Odex’s own people, and the President, Dr. Toh See Kiat, a lawyer and ex-President of CASE (whom I doubt even watches anime). Their address is Odex’s, and other distributors and broadcasters aren’t represented. The whole set up is business-oriented, so you think they care about the anime community?
Yeah, you otakus created this “juicy” and “profitable” market for us through the years. Thank you, thank you…. now buzz off and let us run our business.

Well, like any other business, we have a hand, although small, in the profitability of Odex’s sales.
I’m not being biased here, but a good business, even if it’s a monopoly, should practice a give-and-take.
