Dear Anime Downloaders of Singapore

Trailing through the blogosphere of Singapore, I came across Darkmirage’s post about the anime licensor ODEX taking police powers into their own hands. tj_han has just been handed the letter as well.

And then this.

What has the licensing of shows in the “cleanest country in the world” come to? Oh wait. Did what I just said an irony? Oxymoron? Whatever, but the point is, the cyber arm of the government of Singapore is now extending its hands into places it shouldn’t.

By “places”, I mean the Internet. Look at China and tell me why the production of “cheap inferior goods” hasn’t stopped reaching its destination all around the globe. We already have poisonous materials in toys and contaminated food to deal with. :V

Under Singapore law, “willful and significant” downloading of illegal content is a crime punishable by a fine of up to 20,000 Singapore dollars (US$13,000) or up to six months in prison.
Spare me the legalese. Just tell me what logic did the lawmakers follow. What do they mean by “willful and significant”?

This irritates me. At least the Optical Media Board is doing its job better, compared to the RIAA, MPAA, and now ODEX.
