My Otaku Cousin
July 27th, 2007 at 12:27 pm (Miscellaneous, Take)
Let me tell you guys of an interesting, and quite amusing, memory of mine. This is somewhat related to anime, since it is the focus of this rant of mine. ^^
I am now a corruptor of childhood innocence.
Just kidding.
I now have an ally within my own bloodline. It’s my younger cousin, and he’s around 10 or 11 years old. So that makes him half my age, and yes, he’s a male. Haha.
Last summer, I just indoctrinated (lol) him into the fold. You know, when the curiosity of children persuades them to “try it on”, so to speak, to see what’s it’s like. It’s an interesting experience, to say the least. (^_^)
Well, this is with a neutral intention of course. No ill will or anything.
I remember a text conversation we had just a week before my trimestral started. And it was about how to download anime and stuff from the Internet. Now, having been smart enough to know the usual stuff, and go around the usual places, this puts me in a position of authority. Like a sempai to a kouhai, or to use a more culturally familiar analogy, a teacher to his student. I just told him to get the requirements, him passing his questions to me, and me providing him with the hints. I’m not going directly into the answers, because he has to know that himself, on his own. I did too, way back when I started maturing into the otaku I now know myself as.
It went well, much to my amusement and surprise. Now he goes to the usual places, downloads the usual things and requirements needed, and off he goes enjoying what he has done. Such is the reward of accomplishment.
Even so, it’s been an amusing memory of mine. I don’t know whether to feel proud or ashamed of it, though.
Now excuse me while I break off. This has gotten far too long. ^^;;

Kinda like how my 5 year younger brother’s been watching anime with me since I was 10. He saw Love Hina when he was around 8 I think. Just 13 now, and while not an otaku, scares me sometimes with his anime viewing. I think he never watched things on his own, till I walk in his room and he’s finishing up SHUFFLE! or starting Seto no Hanayome. He’ll never beat me in keeping up with the latest stuff though : )

Tess Said:The same can be said for my younger cousin. He often delves into various search engines (as well as torrent listing sites like Animesuki and TokyoTosho) looking for something he would like to watch (mostly from the comedy genre; he is kinda picky), and sometimes takes suggestions from me as to what he will watch (I have my own stash of “comedy” and “romantic comedy” genre series).

Hehehehe. You are a BAD sempai, Ronin. Well, that’s a good thing. At least you haven’t (or didn’t) teach him the DARK ARTS of that field.:D Just don’t let him sink too much into watching though, as it might affect his academics.

OHKRA! Said:Of course I’m just teaching him the basic skills (you know, as long as he doesn’t look into hentai).
Also, he’s smart enough to balance his online activities with his life outside.

Heh, good for you XD. Need to spread the Otaku culture around. Well, I agree we have to do it in a responsible way, though.

lanie-emon Said:Of course. I am aware our “culture” is aging. Must also prevent degeneration into “potential pedophiles”… well whatever those from the anti-otaku camp are protesting. XD

And also, preventing the “HIKIKOMORI SYNDROME”.
Well, about those anti-otaku teams, they should shut the hell up. They just yelping like dogs. In fact, I always notice that otakus in a way are more mature than those people calling themselves ‘mature’. Take an example of those politicians who’re already making our country kiss the soil…
