“Big On Japan!” on The Sunday Inquirer Magazine
July 12th, 2007 at 7:39 pm (Articles, Miscellaneous, Take)
So I got myself a copy (free actually) of the Sunday Weekly Magazine. What made me convinced to talk about it here is that its cover story talks about the second wave of “foreign invasion”. No I’m not referring to the invasion of the Japanese in Philippine shores, but to their pop culture invasion. Admittedly, it has seeped through into the psyche of the next generation of Filipinos.
I present to you the Pinoy otaku insignia.

The fact that the so-called “second invasion” has entered the Philippines is a cause for concern, at least for me. Most of the articles talked about living the otaku lifestyle, and there’s one article that mentioned about “The H Question”. Also cosplay fascination.
Well, at least they included a section for Korean foodstuff. As well as bargain deals courtesy of the Land of the Rising Sun.
All this physical and cultural raid has left the blogger himself wondering if there will be an epic showdown of Korean and Japanese culture clash.

Well, at least they show a balance view towards otaku culture. And for that I’m grateful.

maybe in your region the otaku lifestyle is more prominent… here in cebu i can only find a few places with official anime related stuff… most of what i can find are bootleg… what i’m waiting the most from this “invasion” are the taiyaki and the choco coronet i can’t seem to find one here… maybe i’m just not looking hard enough… i’m also waiting for some manga titles to be published here… i did find a few in a national bookstore branch but i don’t think it’s officially licenced here.. the books were assorted del rey licensed titles and i don’t know if that it’s really official because i believe they only hold the north american license of the titles… sorry for being wordy… hehe…

Well that’s -1 for sociocultural equality.
Thanks for the feedback, btw.

Well… That’s a +1 for positivity, a -1 for sociocultural equality, +3 to motivate the pinoy otakus to get out from their shell, running wild and free and a random status effect for the normal people.
I don’t know what the future holds for this situation… But I just hope it goes smoothly. Don’t just let the politics as it’ll cause a big disaster…
And what the heck? The insignia is Sakura Shinguji…? Man, can they think of other designs other than than? I mean, they should create an original character for the insignia…

Ohkraオクラ! Said: Too bad we don’t have a version of Japan’s Akihabara, now do we?
Ohkraオクラ! Said:Well, it’s not an actual insignia, per se. I only illustrated that as an example, while searching for a random avatar-sized image that I could use. By the way, that image came from a “Filipino Otaku site”.

Hehehe, Phil. version of Akihabara? Though, all I could think of is DIVISORIA. But that’s already a punch to the moon.:) And… I’d rather go to Japan and explore Akihabara myself than reading books about it.:)
