What if Megatokyo Was Animated?

While I was going through Megatokyo’s 1000th (techinically, but it’s not), a lot fo these questions popped into my mind:

  • How would you animate the appearance of Rent-a-Zilla at random points in the story?
  • Would Largo and Erika’s relationship play out as a romantic comedy for geeks?
  • Would the same relationship presentation work for Piro and Kimiko? The story of a voice actress and a “fan” sounds kinda familiar…
  • How would the side stories fit into the main story? You know, the in-game scenarios.
These and other inquiries are currently being written in my thoughts. Readers, how would the Megatokyo universe look, anime style? I’m sure Fred Gallagher himself would approve of your suggestions, if he ever willingly agrees to the idea. :P

Let’s just go straight for the live action adaptation. I read Megatokyo randomly so I really have no idea what’s going on. I think a nice 90 minute movie would do for me.

I’m sure we can fit Tobey Maguire in there somewhere as well.

Which part would the “90-minute live action adaptation” fit in, I wonder? During the transition from RL to in-game world? :P

    • How would you animate the appearance of Rent-a-Zilla at random points in the story? - 3d superimpose on 2d animation?

    • Would Largo and Erika’s relationship play out as a romantic comedy for geeks?-I reckon so..

    • Would the same relationship presentation work for Piro and Kimiko?-The story of a voice actress and a “fan” sounds kinda familiar…_it sounds like REC, but piro said it would not turn out like that so…it’s up to him i guess.

    • How would the side stories fit into the main story? You know, the in-game scenarios.- Something like bleach shinigami illustrated picture book? or special episode?

It does sound like it, huh? I’ll take Fred’s word for it. :)

Good idea. That way, the continuity wouldn’t break so much.

You mean embedding or inserting Ren-a-Zilla in a 2d background? The 3d animation would seem kinda out of place, unless the animators know their stuff, and work around this minor issue.

Plot points like Rent-A-Zilla (Random? Hardly.) or the Largo/Erika and Piro/Kimiko relationships (yes, they are romantic comedies) wouldn’t change at all from the original comics if MegaTokyo were animated. Nor would the video game stuff since those are part of the main plot also. Though if you meant the presentation, it would be interesting if the game stuff was rendered in CGI instead of cel animation. If you meant how would the Omake Theater stuff show up, that would probably be done in a special episode.

The genuine issues about bringing MT to animation are primarily how to handle the massive bilingual nature of things, which in print is just glossed over using the brackets. People also have to come to terms with the fact that any attempt at spoken leet can’t come close to reflecting wr1773n l337. I’ve also seen people question how the sketchy nature of Fred’s pencil art would make the transition to the more simplified character designs inherent in animation, though I doubt that would be a major issue.

Ah, I see your point, Ray. Converting the “pencil art” to smooth lines and fluid animation would be a very tiring and demanding task. Same goes for the whole “bilingual nature” of Megatokyo. They are in a foreign (where I come from) country and culture, after all. ^^

An animated version would be rather interesting to see.
