Comment Control

If you have been visitng my blog for a long time, and revisit some of my older entries, you might have noticed the “Comments are closed” line at the end of each entry post (most have 0 comments. :(). Well, I have an explanation behind it.

Well, to prevent sudden influxes of comment spam on my blog (I mentioned it in my New Year post a few days back.), as well as my lack of technical experience in installing and managing Wordpress plugins (particularly the Spam Karma add-on; the last one I installed was the Gravatars plugin, back when I was starting to get used to the Wordpress blog backend interface; I haven’t used it since.), I had to uncheck the “Allow Comments” option on every post that I made. I noticed that the comments spams are mostly from my older entries, dating way back some months ago (including the “Decreased Posting Frequency” and “Women and Traps” posts). Some are even referencing my anime reviews from last year. So I decided on that course of action, even if that action was unadvisable.

Well, now that I’ve said that, I hope no one (or nothing, for that matter) decides to flood my most recent enties with comments spam, as I’ll be sure to lock it on first sight.

I hate spam too. I have two plugins I use that has greatly reduced the amount of spam: 1) Bad Behavior 2.08 which stops spambots: http://www.homelandstupidity.us/software/bad-behavior/

    2) Bannage, which allows you to ban IPs, usernames, email, etc. http://www.justinshattuck.com/bannage/

This site claims their Raven’s Antispam has stopped all spam. I haven’t tried it though, since I’m pretty satisfied with the two plugins I’ve been using. Good luck with your fight against spam!

    Oh… and I noticed you’re using Wordpress 1.52… I think it’s about time to upgrade to the latest… 2.06.

I for one agree with the rest of the blogosphere that banning should be used as a last resort. Thanks for the suggestion, though. :) wrex Said:

The reason I haven’t upgraded is because I’m afraid of running the risk to somehow make my blog inaccessible (even to me). Plus, I need to have a lot fo free time to do so, since I’m not technically inclined (I’m quite busy with school, btw.). I’ll try to, though, when I have the chance. :)
